Our diocese has 27 parishes that minister to the needs of their communities, centered on the Cathedral Church of St. George the Martyr in Jerusalem. Every parish has an active ministry: services, bible studies, Sunday schools, youth summer camps, youth gatherings, art and music education, and much more, though none have any administrative staff and rely on volunteers to help the clergy.
Our diocese is a strong witness of Christian presence and solidarity, in a region where Christians are more and more vanishing. One of our key concerns is to take a pro-active approach in maintaining an indigenous Christian presence in the Holy Land.
Due to the inequality and injustice caused by the political situation, the number of indigenous Christians is falling dramatically (emigrating to other parts of the world, in order to be able to feed and support their families).
Without the support of the worldwide Church, the Holy Land will soon be without an indigenous Christian presence. This will be a tragedy for Christianity and will bring further instability to this region.
With the increasingly difficult political situation, it is very important to support diocesan ministry institutions. They are an excellent example of continuity and stability in a chaotic environment where people feel very uncertain about the future. They are the best possible witnesses of positive Christian presence and action and examples of Christians representing moderate and mediating forces in their societies.
In the light of the urgent need to preserve an indigenous Christian presence, I would welcome your support of the ministry of our diocese that serves the welfare of the indigenous Christians and their Jewish and Muslim neighbors.
